Earthquakes

People living in coastal Southern California continue to face the greatest earthquake risk across the nation and, historically, much of that risk has been assumed by the San Andreas Fault. But a new study has identified a new source of a potential magnitude 8.0 quake. The Ventura-Pitas Point...

Experts have been uncovering the stark realities of the earthquake that rocked New Zealand last week. The 7.8-magnitude tremor, which struck on November 14, killed two people and triggered a tsunami and landslides. Now geologists have shone a light on the impact of the earthquake on the South...

A magnitude-5.8 earthquake and a series of smaller aftershocks in Oklahoma has led to the discovery of a new fault line. The discovery stoked fears among some scientists about other unknown faults that could be triggered by oil and gas wastewater that’s being injected deep underground. State and...

Some call it "The Crack." To others, it's "The Gash." And a few may see it simply as a case of the Earth opening up and swallowing itself. Whatever the label, the emergence of the new geologic phenomenon in Wyoming's Bighorn Mountains is impressive. SNS Outfitters & Guides first alerted...

When the 2011 earthquake and tsunami struck Tohoku, Japan, Chris Goldfinger was two hundred miles away, in the city of Kashiwa, at an international meeting on seismology. As the shaking started, everyone in the room began to laugh. Earthquakes are common in Japan—that one was the third of the...

An odd phenomenon may explain why the Southeastern United States has experienced recent earthquakes, even though the region sits snugly in the middle of a tectonic plate and not at the edges, where all the ground-shaking action usually happens. This seismicity — or relatively frequent earthquakes...

The director of the Southern California Earthquake Center, Thomas Jordan, made an announcement recently that would have sent a chill down the spine of every Californian: that the San Andreas fault appears to be in a critical state and as such, could generate a large earthquake imminently. Of...

The drone footage that you are about to see is absolutely jaw-dropping. When I first watched it, I could hardly believe the extent of the devastation that has taken place on Japan's southern island. Near the end of last week, a magnitude-6.5 earthquake was quickly followed by a magnitude-7.3...

Earthquakes

We aren't promised to know the exact day or time for when the end will come, but just as we know the signs for seasonal changes, we can "read" certain signs that help us to know that we are entering the season for the rapture of the church, the tribulation, and His return to earth. In Jesus' discourse about the endtimes in Matthew 24, one of those signs are earthquakes. For some of Prophecy Dude's teaching on earthquakes, go to the "Tags" section on the News and Tweets page and click on earthquakes. There you will find a list of blogs that treat that subject.

On this page you will find updated feeds on earthquakes over the previous seven days with magnitudes of 5 and greater. A map feed is also provided to assist with identifying the location of these earthquakes. The picture below illustrates the concentration of earthquakes along fault lines and continental plate borders. Often Volcanoes are associated with tectonic plates especially in areas where they "rub' one another.

Over the past decade, the climate has not warmed as swiftly as global climate models predicted, but it hasn’t been clear what factors might be tamping down the warming. Some experts point to increased industrial emissions of sulfur dioxide from coal burning over China and India. Others have...

Massive volcanic eruptions may have led to the extermination of half of Earth's species some 200 million years ago, a new study suggests. The release of gases from giant eruptions caused climate change that led to the End-Triassic Extinction, the widespread loss of land and sea species that made...

ITALY – Mount Etna, Europe’s highest active volcano sent plumes of ash and lava into the night sky on the island of Sicily. Italy’s National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology has recently registered increased explosive activity by the volcano, Italy’s Civil Protection agency said. There are...

The earth didn't warm as much expected from 2000 to 2010, and scientists at the University of Colorado Boulder say they may have identified the reason: sulfur dioxide emissions from volcanoes. When volcanoes emit sulfur dioxide, says CU, it rises into the stratospheric aerosol layer, and a series...

A volcano is a vent or fissure in Earth's crust through which lava, ash, rock and gases erupt. A volcano is also a mountain formed by the accumulation of these eruptive products. Let's take a look at how volcanoes form: Earth's crust is 40 to 250 miles (64 to 402 kilometers) thick. It is...

The way gravity deforms volcanoes could help explain mysterious features seen in volcanoes on Mars, Earth and elsewhere, as well as potentially revealing risks that volcanoes pose to neighboring communities on Earth, a group of researchers says. Gravity can make large volcanoes warp under...

A scientist from the University of Utah has confirmed that two continent-sized "thermochemical piles" are slowly converging at the bottom of Earth's mantle about 1,800 miles (2,900 km) beneath the Pacific Ocean. This process, says geologist Michael Thorne, could eventually lead to a cataclysmic...

Every few million years or so, the Earth burps up a gargantuan volcano. These aren't like volcanoes in our lifetimes; these "super volcanoes" can erupt continuously for thousands of years. While they might be rare, you'd best look out when one hits. The ash and volcanic gases from these volcanoes...
