Earthquakes

As earthquake waves ripple through the Earth, the crust buckles, rumbles and roars — both audibly and at infrasonic frequencies, below the range of human hearing. A new study finds the Earth's surface acts like a speaker for low-frequency vibrations, transmitting an earthquake's infrasonic...

YOU may not have felt it, but the whole world shuddered on 11 April, as Earth's crust began the difficult process of breaking a tectonic plate. When two huge earthquakes ripped through the floor of the Indian Ocean, they triggered large aftershocks on faults the world over, and provided the best...

New Englanders were shaken late Tuesday by a 4.0 magnitude earthquake centered about three miles west of Hollis Center, Maine, or about 52 east-northeast of Concord, New Hampshire. The USGS says it took place about 7:12 p.m. local time. It was originally reported to be a 4.6 magnitude, but was...

COLOMBIA - According to the Volcanological and Seismological Observatory of Manizales, an earthquake measuring 2.6 on the Richter scale occurred yesterday at 11:54 am. The statement also notes that the incident “is associated with rock fracturing within the volcanic edifice.” The volcano-tectonic...

(DeSoto County, MS) We haven’t felt an earthquake in the Memphis area for years now, but it’s still at the top of the minds of lots of people like Ashley Byford, ”I worry about it. You know, because we’re like right on the fault line so I just worry about it.” And recent earthquakes in...

WASHINGTON - Parts of Washington and Oregon are in the midst of silent earthquakes this week. You can’t feel this so-called “slow slip” quake and it doesn’t cause damage. Still, scientists want to learn more about the recently discovered phenomenon. Little is certain so far, but there’s a...

The entire outermost part of Earth may be wandering over the planet's whirling molten core, new research suggests. Knowing whether the Earth's outer layers are roaming in this manner is key to understanding the big picture of how the planet's surface is evolving overall, scientists added. At...

Scientists at Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego have come a step closer to deciphering some of the basic mysteries and mechanisms behind earthquakes and how average-sized earthquakes may evolve into massive earthquakes. In a paper published in the Aug. 30 issue of the journal...

The Middle East may not possess the same reputation for seismic disasters as some other parts of the world, but that is of little comfort to the people of north-west Iran, over 300 of whom were killed when a twin earthquake struck the country's mountainous region earlier this year. Destroying...

DALLAS — First we get In & Out Burger, then Trader Joes, bike trails, and now we are getting earthquakes! Saturday evening, September 29, at about five minutes after 11 p.m., I thought I heard a weird roar and felt like someone had just shut a garage door with extreme force — leaving the...

Earthquakes

We aren't promised to know the exact day or time for when the end will come, but just as we know the signs for seasonal changes, we can "read" certain signs that help us to know that we are entering the season for the rapture of the church, the tribulation, and His return to earth. In Jesus' discourse about the endtimes in Matthew 24, one of those signs are earthquakes. For some of Prophecy Dude's teaching on earthquakes, go to the "Tags" section on the News and Tweets page and click on earthquakes. There you will find a list of blogs that treat that subject.

On this page you will find updated feeds on earthquakes over the previous seven days with magnitudes of 5 and greater. A map feed is also provided to assist with identifying the location of these earthquakes. The picture below illustrates the concentration of earthquakes along fault lines and continental plate borders. Often Volcanoes are associated with tectonic plates especially in areas where they "rub' one another.

A rough estimate based on geologic records indicates there's a 1-in-10,000 chance of a "supereruption" at Yellowstone during our lifetimes. However, given the erratic nature of volcanoes, that number doesn't mean much. The bulging pocket of magma swishing around beneath Old Faithful might never...
