Famines and Pestilence

Then he said to them: "Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be great earthquakes, famines and pestilences in various places, and fearful events and great signs from heaven. Luke 21:10-11

We Have Hope...

Yet I still dare to hope
      when I remember this:
 The faithful love of the Lord never ends!
      His mercies never cease.
 Great is his faithfulness;
      his mercies begin afresh each morning.
 I say to myself, “The Lord is my inheritance;
      therefore, I will hope in him!”
Lamentations 3:21-24

Famines, Pestilence, Economic and Environmental Chaos

The end times will be characterized by economic turmoil. Jesus said in Matthew 24:7 that there would be famines and pestilences and he catagorized this as part of "the beginning of sorrows." We believe this to be a time-period just prior to the tribulation period. The Book of Revelation also describes economic chaos in Revelation 6:5-6
When He opened the third seal, I heard the third living creature say, “Come and see.” So I looked, and behold, a black horse, and he who sat on it had a pair of scales in his hand. And I heard a voice in the midst of the four living creatures saying, “A quart of wheat for a denarius, and three quarts of barley for a denarius; and do not harm the oil and the wine.”
Taking a look back at Ezekiel 38, part of the motivation for Russia and the Arab Coalition attacking Israel might very well be due to a food shortage possibly resulting from a pestilence. Take a look at these scriptures from Ezekiel 38
“Behold, I am against you, O Gog, the prince of Rosh, Meshech, and Tubal.  I will turn you around, put hooks into your jaws, and lead you out, with all your army, horses, and horsemen, all splendidly clothed, a great company with bucklers and shields, all of them handling swords (v. 3-4).
‘Have you come to take plunder? Have you gathered your army to take booty, to carry away silver and gold, to take away livestock and goods, to take great plunder?’”’(v. 13)
Is it possible that the hooks in the jaw not only mean a reluctance to attack, but the idea that the mouth is needing food and is in hunger could suggest a food shortage causing them to attack Israel? God has blessed Israel with the ability to make the desert bloom (Ezekiel 36:35, Isaiah 35:1, 2). This could definitely be one possible reason for the attack.
