White House Fails to Release Easter Proclamation

Urban Christian News:  What happens when the White House press secretary doesn’t know if President Obama has made a public statement about a major holiday?

That seemed to be the case on Monday, when press secretary Jay Carney said he didn’t know if Obama had signed any statements about Easter. (Obama, in fact, had not.)

“You know, the president went to church yesterday. It was well covered. I’m not sure if we put out a statement or not,” Carney said in his briefing when he was asked why nothing was put out by Obama.

But when a reporter asked why Carney himself didn’t know if a statement had been issued for a big holiday, as is customary, Carney shot back, “I’m glad you’re asking me key important questions, guys.”

Obama’s celebration of Easter has been “highly visible to most Americans,” the spokesman added. "As a devoted Christian, he believes it's a very important holiday for him personally, for his family and for Christians around the country.”

Last year, Obama talked about Easter in his weekly address. This week, Obama’s Saturday speech was about rising gas prices and mentioned Easter only in passing.
