US says will oppose UN condemnation of Israel

US State Department spokesman Mark Toner said that the US will oppose a bid to recognize a Palestinian state and condemn Israel for settlement construction in the Security Council.

 Toner said that direct talks were the only way in which the parties could eventually reach an agreement, and not under the auspices of the Security Council. He noted than a US veto was hypothetically possible at the current stage. (Yitzhak Benhorin, Washington)
