Super Bug: Deadly Infection That's "Smarter" Than Medicine

You go to the hospital when you feel sick. You get medicine. You keep taking it after you feel better. Usually this is how things go when you're trying to knock something out of your system. It turns out that doing this too often could lead to a serious problem with a rapid infection tearing through your body.

The super bug is an infection that is smarter than a lot of antibiotics and therefore, resistant against them. A lot of time, the super bug spreads in larger university hospitals. Luckily, we don't have any cases around here.

In the past, 42 states have seen super bug cases in one place or another. The super bug reacts kind of like a staph infection or MRSA but a lot more intense.

The bug starts as an infection, generally one that has been over treated with the same class of antibiotics. Your body then becomes familiar with the bacteria and the medication that has been used to treat it in the past. What's been happening at some medical centers now is that doctors are running out of medications to treat certain strands, and it becomes deadly. The super bug can spread in a center, especially among people with lowered immune systems.

Some doctors think that by limiting the use of antibiotics when it's not appropriate can actually decrease the rates of these multi-drug resistant organisms in developing.  WDTV
