Knessset Discusses Cost of Ethiopian Aliyah

From Israel National News:

The Knesset's Immigration and Absorption Committee is discussing the absorption of the Falashmura from Ethiopia into Israel. Recently the government voted to bring a final 8,000 people into the Jewish state.

Chairman of the committee, MK Danny Danon (Likud) stated "On one hand, the Israeli government invites Ethiopians to immigrate, while on the other hand it closes the valve on budgets." Dannon warns that without preparation Israel will not be able to absorb the Ethiopians properly.

Dr. Avraham Neguise, an Ethiopian-Israeli who leads the organization South Wing to Zion stated, "We must not make budgetary considerations when it comes to Jews immigrating to Israel. Government ministries and budgetary requirements are being exaggerated."

Unlike the Jewish Beta Yisrael community of Ethiopia, the Falashmura are similar to Marranos who converted to Christianity under duress. Most currently live in small rural villages and farms.
