How “Freedom from Homosexuality through the Power of Jesus Christ” Became an “Offensive” Statement

When Apple pulled the iPhone app created by Exodus International [1], that was their reasoning: it’s “offensive.” Exodus is a Christian ministry for men and women with unwanted homosexual attractions, and for their churches, family and friends. “Freedom from homosexuality through Jesus Christ” has long been their message, as Exodus proclaims freedom from the power of same-sex attractions and assists people to live according to biblical sexual standards.
Wayne Besen, executive director of Truth Wins Out (TWO), led the drive to get rid of the app. TWO is an organization that monitors “anti-LGBT organizations, documents their lies and exposes their leaders as charlatans.” A commentary by Besen says, “Exodus fraudulently claims to offer ‘freedom from homosexuality through the power of Jesus Christ’ and they use a hateful and bigoted message replete with scare tactics, misinformation, stereotypes and distortions of LGBT life to recruit clients.”
Fox News [2]quotes Besen calling Exodus leaders “closet cases” who “put people in therapy and try to make them straight.” Another article quotes Besen saying, “This was an offensive, obscene, scientifically-bankrupt app that had no (right) to be on the platform based on rules Apple set up.”
Apple had this explanation: [3] “We removed the Exodus International app from the Apple Store because it violates our developer guidelines by being offensive to large groups of people”
Apparently Apple thinks it’s acceptable to silence Christian teaching and people who believe faith is more important than their sexual urges. But it’s not okay to share the good news about freedom from unwanted same-sex attractions.
It’s not just Exodus, evidently any group which says that marriage is between a man and a woman is also “defamatory, offensive, [and] meanspirited.” Apple recently pulled an app from the Manhattan Declaration, a statement affirming traditional one-man, one-woman marriage, religious liberty and freedom of conscience.
