Highly radioactive groundwater found at Fukushima nuclear plant

Highly radioactive material has been discovered in groundwater at Japan’s stricken Fukushima nuclear pant.

The Tokyo Electric Power Company said traces of strontium-90 have been found at 30 times the legal limit.

Tepco announced that measures have been put in place to prevent the contaminated water seeping into the sea.

Tepco general manager Toshihiko Fukuda tried to calm concerns:

“When we look at the impact it is having on the sea, the levels seem to be within recent trends and so we don’t believe it is having an effect.”

The radio active isotope tritium has also been registered at elevated levels.

The Fukushima nuclear plant was crippled by the 2011 earthquake and tsunami and has recently developed a number of problems.

Earlier in June radioactive water was found to be leaking from a storage tank.  EuroNews
