Five Cannibal Recipes In Honor of Hannibal Premiere On NBC

04/06/2013 10:54

Tonight is the premiere of the much anticipated new television series, Hannibal, based on the "Hannibal the Cannibal" character from Thomas Harris' Red Dragon, Silence of the Lambs, and Hannibal novels.

In homage to the serial killer gourmand and his namesake television show, we bring you some Hannibal-inspired recipes culled from equally morbid blogs from around the world.

hannibal wax.jpgDon't expect 'double handburger and finger fries'. Unlike real life serial killer and cannibal Jeffrey Dahmer, Dr. Lecter has refined tastes, including a love of opera, Bach, and human sweetbreads.

The recipes on the show had to reflect Lecter's fine palate, so we thought we could be of help, but producers wouldn't return our calls begging for a consulting gig, instead hiring James Beard Award winner, chef José Andrés to consult on gourmet cannibal recipes.

If the dishes below whet your appetite, check out the The Cannibal's Cookbook: Recipes and Remedies for Human Sacrifice for further inspiration.

If wine pairings aren't your forte, don't fret. You can always follow Dr. Lecter's advice and go with a nice Chianti.

Bon appétit!

Watch Hannibal grind his own meat:

5. Fava Bean
Our sister paper, the OC Weekly, posted a delightful recipe for fresh fava bean puree, as prepared in the Puglia region of Italy, one of Hannibal's favorite countries.

4."Chicken" Live and Fava Bean Salad
The Sabotage Times teaches us how to 'dine like Hannibal Lecter" even going so far as to make some pairing suggestions, such as Chianti Classico or Chianti Riserva.

3. Florentine Sweetbreads
Here's a delightful recipe for brains, which calls for almond flour, oriental dried fruit, acacia honey, and two full-sized brains. If you can't find brains locally, you may be able to order them online.

2. Flank Stew
Here's a recipe from the Cannibal Gourmet's blog. It calls for two to three pounds of flank meat (which translates to abdominal muscles -- who knew?).

1. "Hannibal Lecter" Lillet Cocktail
We thought we'd end this post on a positive note, so this last recipe is one hundred percent protein free. Dr. Lecter enjoys Lillet with orange as an aperitif, so why shouldn't you?

From Chowhound:
