Expert calls bed bugs a "pandemic"

DENVER -- No place seems safe.  They could be in your bed, at your grocery store, and at your favorite night club.

They are such a huge problem and spreading across the country so fast that the saying, "don't let the bed bugs bite" is taking on a whole new meaning, and now a forum is being held in metro Denver to discuss the issue of bed bugs.

Bed bugs may not spread disease like mosquitoes, but they are annoying and can even traumatize people.  Plus, they're tough to get rid of.

Robert Rosenberg from the National Pest Management Association told FOX31 News the bed bug problem is a crisis for the country.

"It's a pandemic in the United States.  I mean there are an astronomical number of people that are being affected by bed bugs," Rosenberg said.

And these little creepy creatures are making their way in to every part of your life, not just your bed.  They can be found anywhere there are people, such as office buildings and restaurants.
"Bed bugs are great travelers," said Phillip Cooper of Bed Bug Central, "what we call great hitchhikers."

Bed bugs have even made their way to movie theater seats.

"It's not the budget crisis, the war in Afghanistan and the other big issues in America today," Rosenberg said, "but if you look at the news coverage there aren't many more stores that have gotten as much coverage as bed bugs."

That's because the bugs are making a big comeback.

Bed bugs have built up a resistance to most current pesticides, and most people don't really know how to get rid of the pests.

Even "safe sex" has a whole new meaning.  With more people having multiple sex partners, bed bugs may be spread from one bed to another after a night of intimacy.

But there are ways to avoid bed bugs.

"Clutter is the biggest issue. If you're a hoarder, stop hoarding," said Rosenberg.
And if you do find bed bugs, call the experts.
