Droughts, Famines, What's Next?

08/18/2012 11:24

When He opened the third seal, I heard the third living creature say, “Come and see.” So I looked, and behold, a black horse, and he who sat on it had a pair of scales in his hand. And I heard a voice in the midst of the four living creatures saying, “A quart of wheat for a denarius, and three quarts of barley for a denarius; and do not harm the oil and the wine.” When He opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth living creature saying, “Come and see.” So I looked, and behold, a pale horse. And the name of him who sat on it was Death, and Hades followed with him. And power was given to them over a fourth of the earth, to kill with sword, with hunger, with death, and by the beasts of the earth. (Revelation 6:5-8 NKJV)

Among the several things revealed in this passage are some specific items that relate directly to what seems to be happening now.

The scales and the inflated cost for wheat and barley certainly address the economic situation we are in.  The last part lists some of the reasons for a quarter of the earth's population dying and one specifically mentioned is hunger.

The weather this year has been phenomenal all over the world. The severe drought adversely affecting over half of the United States is of concern to the whole world because they depend on America's breadbasket.

Take a look at these recent articles:

One article from NBC news certainly laid the case for some major concerns:

“This is worse than 2008 -- we’re in kind of a perfect storm scenario,” said Ana Puchi-Donnelly, senior agricultural commodities trader at London-based Marex Spectron. “We won’t really know until the whole crop is harvested. We’re talking about the worst drought in the last 50 to 70 years in one of the hottest years on record."

Shriveling supplies have sent grain prices soaring. Corn futures set an all-time high Friday to levels roughly 50 percent higher than the end of May, before the drought took hold. Soybean prices also jumped this week to more than 25 percent above pre-drought levels.

The U.S. crop shortfall comes as the rest of the global supply chain is already under pressure. Hot weather in Russia and too much rain in farmlands in Brazil have lowered crop yields, further straining inventories.

Several urgent actions must be taken to address the current situation to prevent a potential global food price crisis," said Shenggen Fan, head of the International Food Policy Research Institute, a think tank funded by the World Bank.

I don't think anyone can definitely say this is that; that what we are experiencing is exactly what John was revealing in the opening of the second and third seals, but neither can anyone say that it isn't the step leading to that world-wide crisis.

There may be many reasons for Russia (Gog) leading an attack on Israel as revealed by the Prophet Ezekiel, but there is something in that passage that might relate to famine.

Now the word of the Lord came to me, saying, “Son of man, set your face against Gog, of the land of Magog, the prince of Rosh, Meshech, and Tubal, and prophesy against him, and say, ‘Thus says the Lord God: “Behold, I  am  against you, O Gog, the prince of Rosh, Meshech, and Tubal. I will turn you around, put hooks into your jaws, and lead you out, with all your army, horses, and horsemen, all splendidly clothed, a great company  with  bucklers and shields, all of them handling swords. (Ezekiel 38:1-4 NKJV)

Note the specific mention of "hooks into your jaws," could this be an ever so slight reference to hunger? Hunger will drive people to do most anything to survive. Israel, with its over-the-top mastery in agricultural technology could be what drives a very hungry Russia to attack.

Although many prophecy scholars have hung to the notion it would be oil that would drive this Russian led Arab coalition against Israel, it could very well be food. Israel isn't yet known for oil, but this little tiny strip of land that has caused the desert to bloom, is very well known for its awesome land management and food production.

The following article shows Russia is facing a harvest loss:

Let's face it, you can have all the oil in the world and if you don't have food, especially if there is no food to be bought by that oil, there is probably nothing more that will drive a desperate people to do anything. I mean anything.

Famine situations often take years to develop, certainly longer than just this one year. What would happen if next year repeated this year? Already officials are sounding voices of concern about how this situation will affect food availability this winter.

The United State's drive to become less dependent on foreign oil has led it to increase corn crops for ethanol which has decreased corn for food production. Is this going to come back and bite the USA? and the world?

Based on Jesus' end time message, we believe just prior to the rapture and the tribulation, we will see a time of sorrows. This will be a difficult time for the human race as prophetic events take their place in the end time plan.

And Jesus answered and said to them: “Take heed that no one deceives you.  And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not troubled; for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet.  For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be famines, pestilences, and earthquakes in various places.  All these are the beginning of sorrows. (Matthew 24:4, 6-8 NKJV)

We are definitely in these "times of sorrows." These times are not to be feared or dreaded, but we should rejoice! We believe that the church will shine brighter than ever as the body of Christ moves into it's fulfillment of the image of Christ destined from the beginning of time. We should experience some of the greatest miracles ever.

As the world hungers for food while crops fail all over the world, a worldwide end time harvest prepares itself to usher in the birth for which all creation longs.

because the creation itself also will be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God. For we know that the whole creation groans and labors with birth pangs together until now. (Romans 8:21, 22 NKJV)

The signs point to the end times for sure. What other signs are you seeing?
