Ludhiana: An enraged mob set fire to the furniture and other valuables of the lone church belonging to the Church of North India (CNI) in the predominantly Muslim area at Malerkotla town, 60 km from Ludhiana late in the evening on 12 September 2010.
Under the leadership of the Christian United Forum, Christians gathered in front of the Christian Medical College in large numbers to protest against the burning of the church. Christian leaders issued an ultimatum to the local administration to arrest the culprits by 4 pm on 13 September 2010 and also repair the church using the government funds.
“If the culprits are not arrested by 4 pm, Christians in large number will march towards Malerkotla town to protect their interest,” warned the leaders.Following the incident, the administration has declared curfew at Malerkotla as a precautionary measure.
All India Christian Council (aicc) has condemned the burning of the church and sought exemplary punishment for all those behind the attack. The Council has also deputed a fact-finding team to find out what exactly happened at Malerkotla.
