SHIMLA: Delays in engaging vendors for enrolling resident under biometric unique identification (UID) programme notwithstanding, Himachal Pradesh intends to provide this facility to all its residents by May 2012.

Work for capturing biometric data and issuing UID cards is under way in three of the four zones that the state has been divided into for the programme. In Shimla district, it was launched on Thursday. In other parts of the state, 7.48 lakh people or 10.91% of the population have been registered.

"Enrolment is picking up in Mandi, Kangra and Hamirpur zones and pricing problems in Shimla zone have been sorted out with UID registration being launched in the capital on Thursday," said director of information technology Rajneesh Kumar. "Over 100 data-capturing centres would be opened in Sirmaur, Solan and Kinnaur, which make up Shimla zone," he added.
