2010: Year of the Transsexual?

From CitizenLink:

A male actor in women’s clothing and makeup is featured on a magazine that focuses on everything from cross-dressing to “transsexuality.”  A female pop star is pictured as a man in a fashion magazine. And a model “transitioning” from male to female is part of a designer’s advertising campaign.

The New York Times highlighted this mainstreaming of gender confusion [1]and suggested that 2010 “will be remembered as the year of the transsexual.”

In “Bold Crossings of the Gender Line,” [2]  the author notes that there “has been a transsexual moment in fashion in virtually every decade, dating to the early 1960s.” He also writes that this past year’s higher visibility was different, saying the “mystery has been replaced with empowerment, even pride.”

As evidence, one story he points to is that of a mother who has written a book about her 4-year-old son, My Princess Boy [3]. The mother, her book, and the family have been featured in numerous articles and on several talk shows. The boy enjoys dressing up in sparkly jewelry and pink clothes, thereby expressing his “authentic self.” The book is designed to teach us how to support such children – encouraging and affirming their gender confusion.

Our “cultural elites” in the mainstream media, in the arts and in academia often suggest that it is “bold” and “courageous” to go against the mainstream or to oppose “traditional ideas.” These traditional ideas might include real truth such as:

• God made two sexes [4] – male and female.
• Girls need support and affirmation as they grow into a healthy sense of femininity.
• Boys need guidance and challenging as they grow into a healthy sense of masculinity.
• Those who struggle with gender identity confusion should have healing and support to embrace their physical reality – not surgery or hormones.

What would be really bold would be for someone at The New York Times to affirm such truth [5], rather than attempting to undermine reality.
