200 People in the U.S. Sickened by Release of Hazardous Material

USA Moderate // Miscellaneous accident
Authorities in the U.S. state of New Mexico reported that 200 people were sickened on Tuesday following the release of an unknown hazardous material. KFOXtv.com reported that a mandatory evacuation was enforced for approximately 3.2 km around an industrial complex as well as the border crossing at Santa Teresa. Authorities also shut down a nearby airport. Emergency personnel at the scene confirmed that around 200 people received treatment for exposure to a yet to be identified substance, with signs and symptoms of dyspnea, dizziness, nausea and light-headedness. Fortunately, no deaths or critical injuries have been reported so far. Emergency officials from New Mexico and Texas responded promptly, and the local residents were advised to stay indoors. Media reports added that the evacuation is still in effect while testing of air-quality was being conducted to identify the substance that sickened the victims. ubAlert
