A Cry for the Lost

The great day of the Lord is near—near and coming quickly. Listen! The cry on the day of the Lord will be bitter, the shouting of the warrior there.
Zephaniah, 1:14, NIV

The day Jonathan Edwards preached the inspired sermon, Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God, the Spirit of God allowed a holy fear to engulf the crowd. Yet, the unction behind that message was a cry for the lost—as Edwards had come to a divine insight regarding the agony of such separation from God.

How dreadful is the state of those that are daily and hourly in danger of His great wrath and infinite misery! But this is the dismal case of every soul, that has not been born again, however moral and strict, sober and religious, they may otherwise be. Think about that, whether you are young or old! I believe that there are many right now that will actually be the subjects of this very misery for all eternity. Maybe they are now at ease, listening to all these things without much disturbance, flattering themselves that they are not the persons, promising themselves that they will escape. If we knew that there was one person, only one, in the whole congregation, that was to be the subject of this misery, it would be an awful thing! The rest of the congregation would no doubt bitterly cry over him! But, alas! Instead of one, how many is it likely will remember this message—in hell?

Oh, that we, too, would open our hearts to the truth of this message, that our hearts might cry forth unto God in ceaseless intercession for the souls of lost humanity.
